Public sector workers are stressed out

Stress is one of the most common reasons for long-term sickness absence in the UK’s public sector, new figures have revealed.

Research carried out by the employer relations organisation the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in partnership with Simplyhealth shows that 79% of non-manual and 73% of manual public sector employers believe stress is in the top five most common causes of illness among their workers.

However, the survey discovered that the public sector is attempting to address its stress-related sickness absence problems, with 82% of organisations conducting staff surveys, 77% implementing flexible working options and 74% performing stress risk assessments.
