Appeal Court ruling is ‘hammer blow’

A Court of Appeal judgment is a “hammer blow for dodgy dealers in the gig economy”, according to the IWGB (Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain).

The union reports that Stuart Delivery, whose corporate clients include Pizza Hut, JustEat, McDonalds and KFC, lost its appeal in the court, which ruled that the claimant in Augustine v Stuart was a limb (b) worker and it was unlawful to deny him basic workers’ rights like holiday pay and the National Minimum Wage.

The union believes that the ruling could have far-reaching implications, particularly as over 150 more Stuart couriers are already claimants in a similar case being brought by law firm Leigh Day and the IWGB.
