New framework needed for workers’ health and safety
A new Hazards Campaign manifesto calls for a health and safety framework fit for workers, with strong laws, strict enforcement and support for active worker and union participation.
“The current political situation has given us the opportunity to place health and safety firmly back on the political agenda,” said Hazards Campaign spokesperson Janet Newsham.
Manifesto for a health and safety fit for workers — decent jobs and decent lives for all sets out three clear demands for the current and future governments. They must end deregulation and restore regulation and enforcement as a social good; develop a health and safety system based on prevention, precaution and the participation of strong, active unions; and ensure decent health and safety standards in low-paid and precarious work.
The campaign has collated statistics showing that work kills more than 50,000 people in the UK every year, injures more than a half a million and makes millions more ill.
“After Grenfell no-one can be in any doubt as to the deadly dangers of deregulation and it must be halted and reversed,” said Newsham.
