Inflation unchanged

The annual rate of inflation as measured by the Retail Prices Index was unchanged at 2.5% in April. Food prices provided a downward effect on the rate, offset by dearer motoring, including the cost of buying a car.

Under the government’s preferred measure — the Consumer Prices Index — inflation rose for the first time since last June and was running at 1.8% in April against 1.6% the previous month.
