Piracy risks increasing

Seafarers’ union Nautilus International is calling for more resources and better protection for sailors. In five years, 68 seafarers have been killed, 160 injured and 2,761 held hostage by pirates, the union says, with 22% of union members working on ships that have been attacked. The union is concerned about insufficient crew to cover extra watches, and is demanding industry-wide policies to prepare seafarers and look after them after attack.
