Rail unions win campaign to scrap peak fares
Rail unions and the Scottish TUC have celebrated the Scottish Government’s commitment to end peak-time fares on ScotRail services starting September.
The move follows sustained campaigning against what unions described as an “unjust barrier to affordable travel for working people.”
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey called it “a major step forward for passengers, public transport use, and climate action.” He urged the government to follow through with investment and safe staffing to support the decision.
STUC deputy general secretary Dave Moxham described peak fares as “a tax on workers,” and said the change reflects the strength of union campaigning for a greener and more accessible rail network.
Campaigners now aim to ensure this victory leads to a permanently interconnected rail system that prioritises public access over profit.
