Health & Safety Matters

Unions back train drivers

As ASLEF train drivers’ union members took their 74th day of strike action at open access operator Hull Trains at the end of August, 30 unions backed their struggle.

The general secretaries of unions including the FBU firefighters’ and BFAWU foodworkers’ unions wrote to the company warning that sacking an ASLEF member for justifiably raising genuine health and safety concerns at an internal company meeting, at which staff are encouraged to speak freely and frankly, will damage safety culture across the rail industry.
