Representing older workers - a guide for trade union negotiators (July 2013)

Chapter 2

Individualised pay

Where employees are on “personal contracts” and pay is linked to performance (individually or within teams), skills, targets or a range of other criteria, it is often up to individual employees to negotiate their pay, usually with their line manager — although many unions support their members by providing advice and information that can be used in these pay negotiations.

If line managers have discretion over the setting of pay and conditions, it is particularly important to ensure they understand the importance of eliminating age discrimination from the process.
