This chapter covers the main regulations governing health and safety at work, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (Management Regulations) and accompanying guidance. It outlines and summarises the guidance on the requirements of these regulations, including:

• undertaking risk assessments;

• putting into place prevention and control measures and monitoring these;

• carrying out health surveillance;

• appointing safety specialists;

• implementing procedures for serious and imminent danger; and

• providing information and training.

It explains the specific requirements that apply to temporary and young workers and pregnant workers and new mothers. It also looks at the principles of prevention and the hierarchy of prevention and control set out in the regulations.
