Recognising Covid-19 as an occupational disease would entitle employees and their dependents to protection and compensation if they contracted the virus while working. In November 2022, the IIAC industrial injuries advisory council – which advises the government on which diseases should be classified as work-related – recommended that health and social care workers experiencing long term symptoms following Covid infection should be able to claim industrial injuries benefit.
