Ms Naylor worked for Volex Group plc making harnesses. The work involved soldering, giving off fumes that contained a toxic substance called colophony. Naylor argued that exposure to colophony caused her to develop asthma. Volex argued that it lacked knowledge of the effects, but the Court of Appeal agreed with the original judgment that this was no defence and dismissed the appeal.
