That campaign is more urgent than ever as a result of climate change. The Met Office issued its first “Red Extreme” heat warning for parts of the UK in July 2022 and reported that the extreme heat that month was far more intense and widespread than previous comparable heatwaves. For the first time, temperatures of 40°C were recorded in the UK. A new record daily maximum temperature was provisionally reached on 19 July 2022, with 40.3°C recorded at Coningsby, Lincolnshire, exceeding the previous record by 1.6°C.
