Health and Safety Law 2024 (October 2024)

At the end of June 2023, the Conservative government’s Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill (REUL) gained Royal Assent to become an Act. Unions and other organisations successfully campaigned against the wholesale deregulation of European-derived legislation through the Bill, with the government performing a major u-turn on its intended “bonfire” of legal protections. In May 2023, it announced it was abandoning a “sunset” clause in the Bill that could have resulted in the overnight revocation of almost all EU laws embedded in UK law at the end of 2023. Instead, the government listed 600 pieces of law for revocation, many of which it said are “defunct and unnecessary now we have left the EU”.
