The National Minimum Wage 2021 - a trade union guide (December 2020)

Chapter 7

7. Arguments for a higher NMW

[ch 7: page 39]

The aim of raising the NMW is to help the lowest paid and to combat the alarming rise in ‘in-work’ poverty. However, a higher minimum wage ultimately benefits all workers as evidence shows that an increase in the wage floor pushes wages up further up the scale, as workers bargain to maintain their differentials. This chapter outlines union arguments for an increase in the NMW.
