Sickness absence and sick pay - a guide for trade unions and working people (March 2022)

Chapter 3

3. Protecting incomes

[ch 3: page 12]

Workers will not feel secure in coping with sickness absence or disability if it results in a significant loss of income. Income protection during absence from work caused by or related to ill health is mainly provided by:

• Statutory Sick Pay (SSP);

• occupational or contractual sick pay (OSP);

• other forms of paid leave from work;

• state benefits (including Employment Support Allowance and Universal Credit)
