Sickness absence and sick pay - a guide for trade unions and working people (March 2022)

Chapter 4

Self-certification

[ch 4: page 33]

The Statutory Sick Pay scheme (SSP) itself simply requires that if an employee is absent for four days or more in a row, they should self-certify by completing an employee’s statement of sickness (form SC2). However, employers are not obliged to use that form and are very likely to have their own self-certification procedures — especially if they are paying occupational sick pay (OSP) above and beyond SSP requirements.
