Supporting LGBT+ people at work - a guide for trade unions and working people (July 2022)

Chapter 6

Working patterns

[ch 6: page 54]

There are many discretionary workplace practices that may not take into consideration the experience of LGBT+ people and their families, such as those relating to working patterns, time off, flexibility and shift allocation.

When negotiating on work-life balance, it is important to remember that everyone – not just those with children – has a right to a private and social life. For example, there can be an expectation that people without children will always provide cover at Christmas or work the most anti-social shifts. If lesbian, gay and bisexual people are perceived as having no family life, this can have a negative impact on them.
