Law at Work 2024 (August 2024)

Chapter 14

14. Whistleblowing

[page 361]

The Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA) introduced provisions in a new Part IVA to the Employment Rights Act 1996 (ERA 96) to protect employees and workers who disclose information about certain types of alleged wrongdoing at work (“whistleblowing”). They give workers the right not to be subject to a detriment, victimised, or dismissed for making a protected disclosure (blowing the whistle).

In Northern Ireland, whistleblowing law is broadly the same as that of the rest of the UK but is contained in the Public Interest Disclosure (Northern Ireland) Order 1998.
