Striking in response to violence and abuse in schools
[page 45]The NASUWT reports that industrial action has led to improvements in the response to violent and abusive behaviour in several schools. For example, members at Pencoedtre School in Barry, Wales took strike action over violent and abusive behaviour from a small group of students. As a result, the headteacher was replaced, with a commitment from the new head to addressing the issues under dispute. After two days of strike action by members over violence and poor behaviour from pupils at Haven High School in Lincolnshire, the employer agreed to work with the union to put new policies and procedures on managing pupil behaviour in place.
The union also took strike action at Ysgol Nantgwyn in Rhondda, Wales after the school failed to address what it described as serious incidents of violence and abuse from pupils against staff.
