Negotiating the new homeworking landscape - a guide for union reps (April 2021)

Chapter 5

When the homeworker comes into the office

[ch 5: page 30]

While a permanent homeworker will not have a designated office space it is important that they have somewhere to work on the occasions they come into the office. The organisation may have a hot desk policy where a desk is available for multiple workers at different times.

With hybrid workers coming regularly into the office, organisations may still rely on a hot desking system. But it will be important to know who is coming in on what day so that there is never a shortage of desk space. Some forward planning will be needed so that homeworkers are made to feel welcome in the office and that workers get to cross over to ensure regular contact. If hot desking is to be used, a system will have to be in place to ensure it is COVID-secure.
