Health and Safety Law 2021 (October 2021)

Chapter 10

Bank holidays

[ch 10: page 226]

There is no statutory right to take leave on bank holidays. Any entitlement to bank holidays is purely contractual. Employers can include bank holidays as part of the statutory minimum paid holiday entitlement (Campbell & Smith Group v Greenwood [2001] IRLR 588). The only exception is the retail sector, where most shops except small convenience stores, must close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
