Health and Safety Law 2021 (October 2021)

Chapter 6

Organisation of traffic routes

[ch 6: page 119]

Pedestrians and vehicles should be able to circulate safely (Regulation 17). Employers must make traffic routes “suitable” for the people and vehicles using them, using measures such as speed limits and one-way systems where necessary.

To keep people safe when they travel between locations, the new BEIS/DCMS Covid safety workplace guidance advises employers who run shops, branches and other close contact services, for example, that they should encourage people travelling together in a vehicle to, wherever possible, use fixed travel partners; not sit face-to-face; and open windows. They should also provide adequate ventilation by switching on ventilation systems that draw in fresh air and clean shared vehicles between shifts or on handover.

A guide to workplace transport safety (HSG 136) is available from HSE Books or can be downloaded from the HSE website.
