POA general secretary

Steve Gillan has won a further five-year term as general secretary of the 32,000-strong Prison Officers Association after seeing off a challenge from Simon Maisey in the statutory leadership ballot.

Gillan took 76% of the votes cast and Maisey gained 24%. Turnout was low at 5.8% — a feature which may be improved in future elections with the possible introduction of electronic balloting.
