Tackling racism and inequality - a trade union guide (November 2020)

Chapter 5

Access to training

[ch 5: page 39]

One of the key aspects of promoting equal opportunities to progress in their careers is to ensure training is made accessible to, and is taken up by, BAME staff. The UCU suggests negotiators should ask the following questions:

• is there a training and development delivery plan?

• are training and development opportunities available to staff at all levels?

• how are training and development opportunities advertised to staff?

• are there any disparities between ethnic groups in the take-up of training?

• are there indications that black workers do not sign up for training courses? If yes, do you know the reasons for this?

• what steps have been taken to encourage greater take-up of training opportunities?
