Working from home - a negotiator's guide for trade union reps (August 2015)

Chapter 5

Insurance

[ch 5: page 31]

It is normal for the employer to insure the equipment they supply but the employee should find out if their normal home insurance increases as a result of working from home. Traditional household contents insurance often excludes equipment used for commercial purposes.

Also, claims on non-work related items may be affected as the insurer may say that there is a greater fire risk because more electrical equipment is installed and/or that these items make the home a more attractive target for burglars. If this is the case, agreement needs to be reached on how this extra cost is covered.
