Positive action
[ch 12: page 82]Employers that have reasonably identified under-representation of a group in their workplace can use appropriate positive action to encourage members of the under-represented group to apply, such as placing adverts somewhere they are more likely to see them, implementing mentoring programmes, offering targeted work experience and open days, or working with local community groups to encourage applications. Positive action must always be proportionate to need. There should be regular monitoring to make sure measures are proportionate and that they continue to address a genuine need. It is sensible for employers to consult over proposals for positive action so that everyone understands what is happening and why. The EHRC has produced guidance.
