Promoting race equality at work - a union rep's guide (March 2017)

Chapter 1

Apprenticeships

[ch 1: page 7]

BAME people are under-represented in the apprenticeship system. Between 2010 and 2015, people from BAME backgrounds accounted for 15% of the general population but only 10% of apprentices. In 2014-15 they comprised 11% of those starting apprenticeships, according to research group York Consulting.

In London, BAME people are actually over-represented in apprenticeships overall, but are concentrated in lower-level apprenticeships and those in low-paying sectors. They also have lower overall success rates than others.
