Measuring performance

Traditionally, managers assess their staff based on what they see them doing but it makes more sense to judge a homeworker based on their output. Acas advises that: “Performance management of staff who work from home should be consistent with that of office staff, so it would be advisable to focus all assessments on work produced and whether or not objectives have been met”.

For this to happen the manager and homeworker must have a very clear idea of all the tasks and deadlines they must complete and it is best if this is agreed together at a face-to-face meeting.
