Chapter 6

Transport of dangerous goods

[ch 6: page 120]

The carriage of dangerous goods by road or rail is regulated internationally by agreements and European Directives, with biennial updates of the Directives to take account of technological advances. New safety requirements are implemented by EU Member States via domestic regulations which, for Great Britain, directly reference the technical agreements.

The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 (CDG 2009), together with a European agreement commonly known as the Accord Européen Relatif au Transport International des Marchandises Dangereuses par Route (ADR), regulate the carriage of dangerous goods by road. There are also regulations covering the international carriage of dangerous goods by rail, commonly known as RID. More information can be found on the HSE website.
