Union action on climate change - a trade union guide (September 2019)

Chapter 2

2. Green union reps

[ch 2: page 20]

Trade union green or environmental reps (UERs) are important because over half of carbon emissions are work-related. Organisations have a vitally important role to play in tackling climate change, but trade unionists should also play a central role in shaping the way employers respond to this challenge.

“Collective action in the workplace can lead to changes in policy and structures as well as individual behaviour and so is more effective in cutting carbon than actions taken by individual consumers,” says the public and commercial services union PCS. “Staff at all levels need to be engaged in the task of helping to reduce emissions.”

UERs can play a key role in raising awareness and ensuring that environmental issues are included in the bargaining agenda with employers.
