Union action on climate change - a trade union guide (September 2019)

Chapter 2

Green rep networks

[ch 2: page 21]

A number of unions support their reps through green rep networks. For example, public services union UNISON Scotland has an informal green network. Around 12 reps meet four times a year to discuss campaigning and raising awareness. They are aiming to improve UNISON’s own carbon footprint and plastics use and engage with branches to take up climate change and environmental issues with employers and members. The network organises a Green UNISON day and encourages members to use the day to survey members about their own carbon footprint and that of their employers, have stalls, find out about their employers’ green policies, and get stewards and members thinking about the issues.

Prospect has an environment and energy network. This is an informal network which enables members with an expertise or interest in the environment and energy to make contact and exchange information.
