‘Spectrum’ conditions

Autism, Asperger’s syndrome and other associated “spectrum conditions” such as dyspraxia can result in poor attendance or performance which may lead to employees being disciplined under absence or performance management policies. The National Autistic Society provides advice for employers on managing an autistic employee, pointing out that many have a variety of sometimes exceptional skills and that, by taking some simple steps, employers can meet their statutory duty to make reasonable adjustments for these workers as people with disabilities (see Chapter 3).
