Disciplinary and grievance procedures - a guide for union reps (June 2018)

Chapter 11

11. Grievance procedures

[ch 11: page 73]

Like disciplinary procedures, grievance procedures must meet the requirements of the Acas Code (see Chapter 1). An unreasonable failure to raise a written grievance before bringing a tribunal claim is a breach of the Acas Code and can result in a cut in any compensation by up to 25%.

The Acas Guidance suggests that in some cases, mediation can help resolve problems, especially those involving interpersonal relationships, such as disputes with line management (see Chapter 13: Mediation).
