Employees and employers both have the right to notice before the contract of employment is ended. This statutory right is contained in section 86 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 (ERA), which also sets out the minimum periods of notice that can apply. The employer and employee can agree to make the notice period longer than the statutory minimum, but not shorter.
