Sickness absence and sick pay - a guide for trade unions and working people (December 2018)

Chapter 6

Extended occupational sick pay

[ch 6: page 101]

There may be circumstances where the full extent of occupational sick pay is insufficient to support an employee with a long-term health problem. Good occupational schemes make provision for that. Some employers provide an insurance-based scheme, like Bentley (see page 98) — which may be known as Permanent Health Insurance. Others do it as part of their sick pay scheme.

At Toyota, occupational sick pay entitlement starts after the first three months of service (during which SSP would be payable), at six months on full basic salary. It provides up to nine months’ pay for staff with between six and 12 months’ service, and 12 months’ pay after that, followed by 75% of basic pay for a further 12 months. Members with at least two years’ service who have exhausted their Company Sickness Benefit entitlement may be eligible to benefit from the Company Long Term Disability Plan.
