Leave and pay for working parents - a guide for trade union reps (October 2014)

Chapter 1

Negotiating checklist on maternity rights

[ch 1: page 20]

Reps can aim to:

• get maternity leave paid at full pay for as long as possible;

• reduce or remove any service/qualifying period for contractual maternity pay;

• make sure that all contractual rights continue during the whole period of maternity leave allowed under the statutory provisions or under the contract;

• negotiate other benefits or perks such as a maternity grant, for example.

See pages 26-27 for a negotiating checklist for shared parental leave.
