Organising irregular workers — practical advice for reps

• map these workers across the workplace. Information should be made available to a union rep under the general duty on employers who recognise a trade union to disclose information for collective bargaining purposes (Acas Code of Conduct);

• where workers face financial insecurity, emphasize the benefits of union membership, including discounts;

• utilise social media, email and texting to overcome problems caused by erratic hours;

• understand key concerns and do not assume insecurity will be the foremost concern;

• workers may have other second or third jobs where the union organises. Find out the details.
