Representing older workers - a guide for trade union negotiators (July 2013)

Chapter 2

ACAS Checklist on promotion and training

• Opportunities for promotion and training should be made known to all employees and be available to everyone on a fair and equal basis;

• Where employees apply for internal transfers, informal and verbal references are still covered by the law and should be fair and non-discriminatory.

• Job-related training or development opportunities should be available to all employees regardless of age. Any age criteria must be objectively justified. Monitor the provisions of training to make sure no particular age group is missing out.

• Review the style and location of training to ensure:

◊ there are no barriers to any particular age group participating;

◊ it is suitable for people of all ages; and

◊ everyone is encouraged to participate.

For example, if you are using computer-based training, do not assume everyone will be fully competent using a PC or that older people will not be interested or capable of undertaking this.
