HMRC enforces National Minimum Wage for Interns

The National Minimum Wage enforcement team at HMRC collects unpaid NMW from the users of interns. In November 2013, HMRC contacted 200 employers who had advertised internships and in May 2014 it collected £167,000 of NMW back-payments from one unnamed recruitment company, which was paid to several former unpaid interns. HMRC also has the power to fine and “name and shame” non-payers and to levy a penalty.
