Workplace deaths

The number of workplace deaths fell last year by 11 to 212, while the rate of fatal injuries fell to a record low of seven in a million, according to figures released by the Health and Safety Commission.

Tony Woodley, general secretary of T&G general union, welcomed the reduction but said to see a real improvement directors had to face the prospect of jail if their negligence causes death. (See also "Corporate manslaughter bill disappoints unions" elsewhere in this issue.)
