Kemp stands down

Steve Kemp, national secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, has announced he will not seek re-election when his period of office runs out. He said his decision came after a "great deal of thought". There have been reports of tension in the union between those, like him, who feel that retired miners are crucial to the union and others who want membership to be reserved for "working miners".
