Manufacturing output plummets

Manufacturing output in the final quarter of 2008 fell by 5.1% compared with the previous quarter, according to the Office for National Statistics. It is the heaviest quarterly fall since 1974.

There were widespread decreases in output with falls of 24.5% in car manufacture and 21.4% in basic chemicals.

Manufacturing output was 8.1% lower than the same period a year ago.
