Violence against shopworkers

Retail union Usdaw has expressed concern over reports by the Office for National Statistics of a 4% increase in shop thefts.

General secretary John Hannett said: “It is very concerning to hear that shop theft is on the increase because it is often linked to violence against retail staff.”

He said Usdaw’s own research “shows an unacceptably high level of violence against shop workers, with over 300 assaulted every day across the UK”.

Hannett added that it was particularly concerning that shop thefts are increasing when overall crime is falling. “So we are looking for employers, the police and government to work with us to make a real difference.”
