Safe use of lifting equipment code

A revised Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) and guidance on the safe use of lifting equipment has been published by the HSE.

The law on safe use of lifting equipment is set out in the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) which also provide further guidance on Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

The ACOP and guidance is useful for any worker that uses lifting equipment or for those providing such equipment for staff use. Employers and those representing workers will also find the ACOP and guidance helpful, as well as those acting as a competent person responsible for examining work lifting equipment.

The code and guidance has been brought up-to-date with regulatory changes. The guidance provides further clarification on which lifting equipment is covered by the regulations and what the role of the competent person entails.

The context and examples used in the guidance have been extended to show that LOLER applies across every industry using lifting equipment. This includes new examples to show the impact on the health and social care sector.
