Journalism victory

The National Union of Journalists has hailed a Northern Ireland court decision not to order journalist Suzanne Breen to hand over her notes to the police as a “landmark victory for journalism and civil liberties”.

The notes, computer equipment and other material related to stories on the Real IRA. Jeremy Dear, NUJ general secretary, said he hoped the security forces would concentrate on tracking down criminals “rather than targeting journalists”.
