Membership rises
The proportion of employees who are union members crept up in 2002-03 from 29.0% to 29.1%, according to the government's Labour Force Survey. The figure was the same for both women and men.
The total number of union members rose very slightly to 7.42 million, and the proportion of employees covered by collective agreements also crept up, from 35.6% in 35.8%.
