Stress and mental health at work

Chapter 1

What are the signs and symptoms of stress?

[page 13]

HSE advice sets out that signs of stress in a worker include changes in the way they act, and the way they think or feel can also change. They may take more time off, arrive for work later, or be more “twitchy” or nervous. They may have mood swings; become withdrawn; lose motivation, commitment and confidence; or experience increased emotional reactions such as being more tearful, sensitive or aggressive.

Signs of stress in a team include arguments between team members, higher staff turnover, more reports of stress, more sickness absence, decreased performance, and an increase in complaints and grievances.

The NEU education union lists some of the well-known symptoms of stress and anxiety as:

• Unexpected attacks of heart-pounding panic;

• Trouble concentrating;

• Irritability;

• Restlessness;

• Stomach upset and dizziness;

• Frequent urination or diarrhoea;

• Shortness of breath;

• Headaches;

• Fatigue;

• Insomnia; and

• Muscle tension.
