Inflation jumps
CPI inflation hit an 18-month high of 3.6% in June. Inflation was pushed up by petrol prices, air fares and the price of rail tickets. Clothing and food prices also contributed.
Inflation in the UK is much higher than in Europe where EU-wide inflation is 2.2%.
The National Institute of Economic and Social Research forecasts that CPI inflation will remain above 3% into 2026.
The RPI measure of inflation favoured by trade unionists was 4.4%.
