Unions urge rethink on net zero strategy

Following the shutdown of oil refining at Grangemouth, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham has called on the government to fundamentally rethink its approach to net zero policies and industrial strategy.

She said Unite supports climate action but criticised the lack of planning: “Working class people are losing their jobs and this government has absolutely no plan to replace them.”

Her comments come after former prime minister Tony Blair warned current net zero policy is “doomed to fail.”

Prospect union’s Sue Ferns backed the call for change, urging more ambitious net zero targets. “Complaints about cost are misplaced and short termist,” she said.
