Law at Work 2013

Chapter 11

Rights to time off, facilities and training

Employees are entitled to reasonable time off to act as reps or candidates, and union reps are entitled to reasonable time off for certified training in the role (section 168 of TULRCA 92).

Reps must be allowed access to employees, accommodation and other appropriate facilities. In 2010, Acas updated its Code of Practice on Time off for trade union duties and activities, which contains guidance on appropriate facilities to be provided to trade union reps.

In April 2013, Acas produced updated guidance aimed at management: How to manage collective redundancies, which can be downloaded from the Acas website www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=4299
